Creating New Traditions: Embracing the Holidays on Your Own

Hello, my lovely readers!

The holiday season is a time for joy, connection, and reflection—but let’s face it, it can also be a little daunting when you’re on your own or going through major life changes. With my move to France looming next year, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to make new traditions for myself in a place where everything will be unfamiliar.

This year, I’m sharing 12 videos all about the holidays, and one thing I’m focusing on is how to keep the magic alive—even when life looks a little different. Today, I want to share some ideas for creating new traditions, finding joy, and making the holidays your own.

1. Redefine What Tradition Means

When we think of holiday traditions, it’s easy to imagine big family dinners or the same decorations we’ve used for decades. But traditions are simply things we do that bring us comfort and happiness. They can be as small as lighting a candle each evening or taking a walk to enjoy holiday lights. For me, I plan to create new traditions in France, like finding a local Christmas market or trying my hand at baking French holiday treats.

2. Incorporate Your Favorite Things

New traditions don’t mean you have to leave the old ones behind. Think about the things that make you happiest during the holidays. Is it a favorite movie? A cherished recipe? Bring those with you into your new life, no matter where you are. I’ll be carrying my love for White Christmas and my aunt Virginia's cookie recipe all the way to France.

3. Connect in Creative Ways

The holidays can feel lonely if you’re far from loved ones, but modern technology makes it easier than ever to stay connected. Plan a virtual gathering with friends or family, or send heartfelt letters or packages. I’m already planning to send personalized holiday cards next year as a way to stay close to those I love.

4. Treat Yourself with Intention

The holidays are a perfect time to celebrate yourself. Maybe it’s a small gift, a day to relax, or something as simple as buying fresh flowers to brighten your home. In France, I imagine indulging in a warm croissant by the fire, enjoying a moment of peace amidst the season.

5. Embrace the Local Culture

If you find yourself in a new place, one of the best ways to make the holidays special is to lean into the local customs. Explore how the holidays are celebrated in your area and let yourself be a part of it. For me, that means embracing the French way of celebrating—think mulled wine, festive markets, and savoring the slower pace of the season.

6. Remember, It’s About the Spirit of the Season

At the end of the day, the holidays aren’t about the specific things we do but about the feelings we create—love, joy, gratitude. Even if your holidays look different, finding little ways to honor the season can make it just as meaningful.

Making new traditions can be a beautiful opportunity to explore what truly brings you joy. Whether you’re on your own this holiday season or simply looking to mix things up, I hope these ideas inspire you to embrace the magic in your own unique way.
